The Phase Linear 700 amplifier got its name from its combined output of 350 watts per channel. Introduced in 1970, it was, for a while, Phase Linear's only amplifier. The 700 put both Bob Carver, the amp's designer, and Phase Linear on the high end audio map. The early 1970's were heady times for Bob Carver as he worked to expand North American distribution and beat the drum for Phase Linear. The 700 soon became a favorite of recording studio engineers (at 19-inches wide, it was designed for rack mounting), rock bands, jazz musicians and audiophiles. This first generation 700 was laid out asymmetrically, with the VU meters and control knobs toward to right side of the front panel. Carver did two things with the 700 that were meant to eliminate the need for a cooling fan, lower operating temperature and aid in servicing when it became necessary: he placed both the output transistors and the power transformer outside the amplifier enclosure. The output transistors were mounted to the rear heatsinks. The 700 was a 45 pound powerhouse. The 700 listed for $749.00 in 1970, and rose slightly to $779.00 in 1972 and 1973. In 1974 it was replaced by the 700 B 4 Цитирай

И не мисля, че е към добро. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Legendary Sigma Sound Studios building sold 01 March 2015: By Matthew Fellows The Sigma Sound Studios building in Philadelphia, which once hosted artists such as the Jackson 5, David Bowie and Billy Joel has been sold, according to Philly.com. The 14,000-square-foot space at 210-214 North 12th Street, constructed in 1930, was bought for $1.55 million and will reportedly be made into apartments. Sigma Sound Studios was opened by Joe Tarsia in 1968. The facility became famous for consistently churning out a string of hits and albums during the 1970s and '80s, including Young Americans (Bowie) and Disco Inferno (The Trammps). Writer/producer duo Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff used the facility for their Philadelphia International Records, and the studios helped define the ‘Philadelphia Sound’ throughout its run, before finally shutting its doors last year. More than 6,000 master audiotapes from Sigma Sound were donated to Drexel University’s Audio Archive for storage and preservation in both 2005 and earlier this year. As the Philadelphia Business Journal reports, this is the second landmark recording studio in the city to be repurposed. The former home of International Records and Cameo-Parkway Records at 309 S. Broad Street will be the site of a new hotel and residential tower being developed by Dranoff Properties in partnership with Gamble. 1 Цитирай

Parni_Valjak Отговорено Март 19, 2015 Автор Отговорено Март 19, 2015 Stefan Kudelski and the world’s first professional-quality portable tape recorder While a couple of people on our list ofGenius!es have become household names, there are many more who have still yet to receive their due mainstream recognition. One of this number is Stefan Kudelski, whose 1951 patent ushered in both the first portable recording device and the company that continues to bear his name – the Kudelski Group. Born in Poland but educated in engineering in Switzerland, Kudelski was at university when he patented the Nagra 1. Generally regarded as the first portable recording device, the Nagra 1 (pictured below) was a compact (approximately the size of a shoebox) reel-to-reel tape recorder. Word of its quality and portability soon spread, with radio stations in Switzerland among his earliest customers. But it was the Nagra 3 – which emerged in 1958 – that arguably had the greatest impact of Kudelski’s designs. Able to synchronise sound with the frames on a reel of film, the Nagra 3 can be claimed to have changed the entire dynamic of film production for the ensuing generation. The mechanics of capturing high quality sound had previously meant that many films were effectively studio-bound; alongside the then-emerging 16-millimetre camera, the Nagra 3helped to pave the way for a new era of filmmaking in which much more shoots would take place on location. Directors to adopt the Nagra 3 in its early years included DA Pennebaker, who used the recorder during production of Don’t Look Back – his 1967 Bob Dylan tour film that arguably counts as the first classic music documentary. Kudelski and his firm continued to innovate in the field of miniature recording. Increasingly, security and surveillance became critical markets for the firm, with the early SN Serie Noire machine reportedly adopted by the American secret services. Today, Kudelski Group is under the leadership of Stefan’s son, André. Stefan himself passed away aged 83 in 2013. www.nagra.com 3 Цитирай

Parni_Valjak Отговорено Април 11, 2015 Автор Отговорено Април 11, 2015 OK, seeing as he was not dead, did he quit before he got sacked? In the April 10,1970 edition of The Daily Mirror, Paul McCartney made the Beatles' secret breakup public by issuing a press release to announce that he has left the group, done in the form of a fake interview: "Q: Is your break with the Beatles temporary or permanent, due to personal differences or musical ones? PAUL: Personal differences, business differences, musical differences, but most of all because I have a better time with my family. Temporary or permanent? I don't really know." John Lennon was furious, especially since the breakup, already agreed upon by the group, was announced just one week prior to the British release of McCartney's first solo album. When a reporter tracks down Lennon for his thoughts, he replies, "Paul hasn't left. I sacked him." Did you know that some reporter actually linked the breakup of The Beatles to the fall of the British Empire? So it is time for a completely unscientific poll. Do you think Paul quit before John 'sacked' him? The public end of The Beatles, 45 years ago today. Цитирай
