Open Access AES E-Library PARAMETRIC EQUALIZATION by George Massenburg ITI Audio Products/ITIRI Studios Cockeysville, Maryland PRESENTED AT THE 42nd CONVENTION MAY 2-5, 1972 ABSTRACT This presentation concerns the application of new equalization techniques to professional audio control. The device utilized is a parametric equalizer which: 1) offers vernier control of frequency and amplitude, and coherent control of "Q" or shape, 2) is suitable for automatic voltage control, and 3) improves transient and phase response by the use of all-active RC circuitry which also eliminates parasitics. https://app.box.com/s/2fql8rpicku4qw2vayram5e8mhn32pks

Open Access AES E-Library Software Techniques for Good Practice in Audio and Music Research ABSTRACT In this paper we discuss how software development can be improved in the audio and music research community by implementing tighter and more effective development feedback loops. We suggest first that researchers in an academic environment can benefit from the straightforward application of peer code review, even for ad-hoc research software; and second, that researchers should adopt automated software unit testing from the start of research projects. We discuss and illustrate how to adopt both code reviews and unit testing in a research environment. Finally, we observe that the use of a software version control system provides support for the foundations of both code reviews and automated unit tests. We therefore also propose that researchers should use version control with all their projects from the earliest stage. Pierre-Simon Laplace and the Laplace transform Characteristic of his time, Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749-1827) published a comprehensive review of the scientific work done by his predecessors with an overlay of his new mathematical interpretation. Titled Celestial Mechanics, the five-volume work replaced the old-style geometric methodology with Laplace’s unique style of calculus, suggesting a broad range of new subject matter – everything from stability of planetary orbits to a study of probability, applicable to the European gaming table. For centuries, the language of mathematics had been geometry, the study of shapes. Shortly before the time of Laplace, Gottfried Leibniz and Isaac Newton, more or less simultaneously and independently, had introduced into scientific discourse a new perspective: calculus, the language of change. As geometry is to space, calculus is to time. Differential calculus takes as its subject matter rates of change and slopes of curves, while integral calculus is concerned with accumulation of quantities and the areas shown graphically that are under or between curves. An infinite sequence or infinite series is seen in either discipline to converge at the region of a definite limit. Laplace, in this context, formulated the equation named for him, the Laplace theorem and the Laplacian differential operator. The Laplace equation is an elliptic partial differential equation. Its solution gives rise to harmonic functions, which play a central role in electrodynamics, describing gravitational and fluid potentials as well. The formal definition of a Laplace Transform of a function f(t). The Laplace transform is similar to the Fourier transform, discussed in a previous article. But rather than expressing a function as a superposition of sine waves, it expresses a function as a superposition of moments. Both the Fourier and Laplace transforms permit the translation of the time domain to the frequency domain. In an oscilloscope, rather than by means of difficult computation, this transformation can be achieved by pressing a button. The Laplace transform is a powerful tool that, in changing from the time domain to the frequency domain, shifts the terms of the inquiry from differential to algebraic equations. Laplace had a wide-ranging intellect. He investigated diverse topics other than celestial mechanics, electrostatics and electromagnetism. He became interested at various times in probability theory, politics and theology. He was among early thinkers who propounded the idea of a black hole. With no observational evidence, he envisioned a body in space that would have such immense density and gravity that no light could escape, so that it became invisible to the outside world.

Тези, които умеят да работят и искат да работят - работят. Тези, които умеят да работят, но не искат да работят - преподават. А тези, които не умеят да работят и не искат да работят - правят партийна кариера и после командват едните и другите.

Throwback Tech: 5 vintage tech commercials that prove how much times have changed The following tech ads are guaranteed to make you laugh It’s safe to say that tech ads aren’t what they used to be. Gone are the days of quirky music, cheesy slogans, and humongous gadgets that made tech commercials so entertaining (and possibly embarrassing) to watch. New control standard for audio at ISE A new open standard, revealed last week at ISE 2015, looks set to make life easier for manufacturers and integrators in the professional audio market. The Open Control Architecture Alliance (OCA) is a group of 14 companies including, Bosch, Harman, Yamaha, TC Group (which includes Tannoy) and d&b audiotechnik. OCA has developed common remote control, monitoring protocol, and a common remote control language, that can be used by all manufacturers. The driving force behind OCA was an explosion of standards in this field, “Last year, we had 14 competing standards, and the industry said, ‘we have to reduce this number,’” noted Marc Weber, chairman, marketing workgroup, OCA, “today, we have 15.” But in an OCA press conference update, Weber revealed that the new open standard (known as the AES-X210 project) was on track to be ratified by Audio Engineering Society this spring. Trying to integrate a professional audio system today is very challenging, with equipment from different manufacturers using different languages and protocols. Quite often, complex translators have to be used, so that one piece of equipment can talk to another. The OCA standard will make it easier to control equipment such as microphones, preamps and mixing desks. “The integrator will no longer have to focus on protocols; he can focus on the user requirements,” said Weber. Terry Holton, general manager Yamaha R&D Centre in London, said: “Audio networking is becoming an increasingly important part of our business, allowing our customers to create integrated solutions, using products from different brands. We think OCA is a great opportunity to establish a standard in the industry.” Michael Munch, vp of business management install and tour at TC Group, said: “We’ve had major projects that involved putting together systems using different products, and it has been a struggle working with the different software. This has been expensive for our clients and us. We see OCA helping to reduce these costs.” The OCA standard is already being used in the real world. Last year, d&b audiotechnik launched the D80 amplifier with integrated OCA software. The amp has been used in major music events for artists such as Lady Gaga and One Direction, and at the Glastonbury Festival. Feedback from users has been positive. “We want the new standard to do for our industry what MIDI did for electronic musical instruments,” Weber said. “Today, we are focusing on audio, but we also have plans for video later.”
