MIDAS launches $5,000 M32 digital audio console at NAMM 2014

maxresdefault.jpg

Midas products hit a new price point with the release of the M32 Digital Mixing Console at NAMM 2014 in Ahaneim. The M32, a 40-input digital mixer for live sound and recording, is available at a suggested US minimum advertised price of $4,999.99.

The new console features the same mic preamplifiers as the Midas PRO Series consoles and ‘one-million lifecycle’ Midas Pro Faders. The new console is 96kHz ready and features 192kHz AD/DA converters.

The mixer also features Ultranet for ‘Acoustic Integration’ with the new Turbosound iQ Series active loudspeakers or in-ear monitors.

An eight-slot stereo effects engine is said to remove the need for outboard gear. An onboard 32 × 32 USB interface allows real-time tracking; additionally multiple expansion cards such as ADAT, MADI and Dante, are available for digital networking.

“We’ve been listening to our customer requests for a lightweight, durable and transportable Midas console,” said Al Walker, senior product manager. “We incorporated the same amazing mic preamps from the Midas PRO1 and PRO2, and gave the M32 professional-grade motorised faders for maximum durability and unparalled accuracy. The design is compact and eye-catching, thanks to the high-tech carbon-fibre and aluminium construction – which also makes the M32 extremely light and portable.”

The Midas M32 is covered by Music Group’s 3-Year Warranty Program.

To Infinity and beyond: Studer Vista X is giant processing leap

27 January 2014

With a launch that the company is calling an “enormous step forward in large-scale mixing console technology for broadcast applications”, Studer will introduce the Vista X (“ten”) digital console and Infinity Processing Engine to broadcast technology specialists in New York today.

Up to 100 invited guests are expected to gather at All Mobile Video Chelsea Television Studios this evening as Andy Trott (VP and GM, Soundcraft Studer) and Peter Glaettli (head of Studer R&D) present the system, which has been designed at Studer HQ in Regensdorf, Switzerland and built in Potters Bar, UK.
We51FEg.jpg
The Vista X (above), says Harman-owned Studer, offers an “unsurpassed intuitive user interface, retaining the patented Vistonics and FaderGlow user interface [seen other other Vista consoles], providing control of 800 or more audio DSP channels and more than 5,000 inputs and outputs”.

At the heart of the system is the Infinity DSP core, which uses CPU-based processors to provide huge numbers of DSP channels for large-scale, high-resolution audio processing and mixing. Studer reports that this is the first time more than 800 audio channels have been processed in a single CPU-based board.

Eschewing current trends for SHARC or FPGA chips, Studer says its approach offers “significant advantages, as CPU processing provides a scalable system, faster development of new signal processing designs, huge channel counts, full system redundancy without a single point of failure and the possibility of running third-party algorithms”.

Infinity employs A-Link, a fibre-based audio protocol that uses a 3GBit/s data rate to offer 1,536 audio channels per connection with 32-bit standard AES timeslots. The Infinity DSP engine in Vista X provides 12 A-Link digital audio interfaces, providing more than 5,000 inputs and outputs. A newly designed high-density I/O system, D23m, is used to break out these A-Link connections to standard analogue, digital and video interfaces. The A-Link interface also provides direct connection to the Riedel MediorNet distributed router, allowing many Infinity systems to be connected together with router capacities of 10,000 x 10,000 or more. Soundcraft and Riedel agreed to collaborate on developing MediorNet-based tools in 2012.

The Vista X console features four processors, offering complete redundancy of the control surface. Now, the Infinity Core, with a combination of CPU-based DSP and A-Link audio interfaces, offers N+1 redundancy of the DSP engine and I/O with instant switch-over between main and standby system without a break in audio transmission.

Vista X with Infinity Core and D23m will ship in April 2014.

Tube amplifiers aren't just for audiophiles

Electric guitarists' love affair with tube amplifiers dates back to the birth of rock music.

  • by Steve Guttenberg
grandchamp-017.jpg

The backside of a Blackie Pagano guitar amp.

Vacuum tube technology goes all the way back to the first decade of the twentieth century, and tubes were integral to the development of radio, television, home/professional audio, radar, telephone networks, medical test instruments, and early computers! The transistor was invented in the late 1940s, but widespread use was only reached in the mid-1960s. Transistors nearly obliterated the tube home audio market in the 1970s, but audiophiles and guitar players never gave up on tubes. Audiophile and guitar tube amps are still hugely popular, precisely because tube gear sounds different -- richer, warmer, more full-bodied -- than transistor amps. Those amps are, for the same output power capability, smaller, lighter, and cheaper than tube amps.

When I spoke with my friend Blackie Pagano about why tube guitar amps are enjoying continuing popularity he said, "Rock music was invented with tube amplifiers, the amplifiers are musical instruments, and their distortion became in integral part of the sound." So much so that Pagano thinks that 99 percent of transistor guitar amps are designed to sound like tube amps. Pagano again, "Tube distortion is in the DNA of rock and roll."

According to Pagano new tube guitar amps far outsell transistor models in the $500 and up categories. Tubes have that special mojo guitarists can't get with transistor amps. Yes, the new breed of digital processing amps can try to emulate the sound of tubes, but they never really get there. That's why the 100+ year old tube technology is still the preferred choice among young and older players, and they're always bringing Pagano vintage amps from the 1950s and 1960s to have them rebuilt. While Pagano also designs and builds new tube and solid-state amps, most of his day-to-day work is repairing old hi-fis and instrument amps.

Older amps in good condition fetch high prices, precisely because lots of today's players crave that juicy distortion they can only get from vintage amps. Amps 50 to 60 years old in good condition are worth a lot more now than when they were new, the best tube gear maintains its value, it's a great investment.New tube guitar amp prices start around $500. A complete list of tube amp makers is too long to include here, but Boss, Ibanez, Marshall, Mesa/Boogie, Peavey, and Vox are still proudly making tube amps. Fender has their 65 Princeton Reverb ($1,299), which is part of their Vintage Reissue Amplifier Series. There are also "boutique" builders hand-making new tube amps.

I'll look at what's up with audiophile tube electronics this coming weekend. The 100-year-old tech is still going strong.

Why does 100-year-old tube technology still turn audiophiles on?

Audiophiles love affair with tube amps -- still crazy after all these years?

Audio Research VSi75 stereo amplifier

This past Wednesday I wrote about electric guitarists and their never-ending love affair with tube amplifiers. The technology dates back to the first decade of the 20th century, and tubes were integral to the development of radio, television, home/professional audio, radar, telephone networks, medical test instruments, and early computers! The transistor was invented in the late 1940s, but widespread use was only reached in the mid-1960s. Transistors nearly obliterated the tube home audio market in the '70s, but audiophiles and guitar players never gave up on tubes. Tube gear sounds different, it's richer, warmer, more full-bodied than transistor models. Those amps are, for the same output power smaller, lighter, cooler running, and cheaper than tube amps. Even so, the popularity of tube amps remains strong.

A properly designed transistor amp will always measure better than the best tube amp, so transistors are definitely more "accurate." I accept that, but instruments and voices sound more like themselves with tube electronics; life is full of mysteries and some things can't be easily explained. We like what we like.

I'm definitely not claiming that tube hi-fis always sound better than transistor gear, that's far from true. Matching tube amps with simpatico speakers is required to get the best sound, transistor amps are less finicky about speaker matching.

Vintage transistor gear doesn't hold its value as well as choice tube stuff, and old CD, DVD, Blu-ray players and digital amps are, with rare exceptions, almost worthless. Nothing gets old faster than new technology, a five year old AV receiver is already out of date, but a well preserved 30 year old tube amp can still fetch a high price on the used market.A lot of audiophile tube gear is expensive, but there's no shortage of affordable tube amps to choose from. I reviewed the still-available Jolida FX10 stereo integrated amp a few years ago, and it now sells for around $600.

American made tube amps from Audio Research, Cary Audio, Conrad-Johnson, Decware, Manley Labs, McIntosh, Rogue Audio, VTL, and Woo Audio are sought after here and in the global audiophile market.
