Recommended Posts

Behringer:

http://www.behringer.com/UB802/index.cfm?lang=ENG

:headbang:

:hello:

:green:

Low impedance microphones, like the SM58 have a very low output level. The sound card on your computer requires a hotter level. Using a transformer can help boost the level of your microphone to something that would likely be appropriate for the sound card. The Shure A96F is the correct transformer. It has a female XLR on one end and an 1/8" connector on the other end. Place the transformer at the computer and use a standard XLR cable between it and your microphone.

If the sound card requires more level than the A96F transformer can supply, you will need to add a microphone preamplifer. We recommend the Audio Buddy from Midiman.

The Audio Buddy from Midiman:

2 independent preamp channels, each featuring:

• mic input (balanced XLR) with phantom power switch and indicator

• high impedance instrument inputs (1/4”)

• gain control

• signal/clip LEDs

• professional balanced/unbalanced line output

• phantom power

frequency response: 5Hz-50kHz, +0, -3dB

mic gain: 60dB maximum

mic input impedance: 1kOhm

guitar gain: 40dB maximum

guitar input impedance: 100kOhms

size and weight: 5-1/2” x 3-3/8” x 1-3/4”; less than 1/2 lb.

SM58 with Sound Blaster Live Value

  Question

  ---- 10/15/2001 03:52 PM ---------------------------------------------

Will it be enough to buy an A96F to make my new SM58 work with Sound Blaster Live.. So far the only information I have its that the

Microphone Imepedance 150 Ohms and a Sensitivity of 2.8mV.

Sound Blaster Live Value Requires 600 Ohms and A Mic Sensitivity of 10-200mVpp.

Will The Transformer A96F Increase the 2.8mV Above 10mV?

How close will the SM58 with A96F be of falling bellow 10mV?

Will the quality and Performance of the SM58 decrease?

Is there any other way I can make the SM58 work without using a PREAMP

and increasing the Sensitivity without loosing Quality?

First change all the voltage measurements into dB terms so they are useable. Use the following link to help: Click Here

The output of the SM58 is -74.5 dBV (with an input of 74 dB SPL).

The input sensitivity of the Sound Blaster card is -40 to -14 dBV.

That means there is a difference of about 30 dB. The maximum gain that any transformer can provide is about 20 dB. That means the A96F will not be able to make up the 30 dB difference. See the following link for more information about transformers: Click Here

You will need a preamp. We recommend the Audio Buddy from Midiman (www.midiman.com)

SM58 connected to a computer sound card

  Question

I just bought a SM58. I want to use the mic for both recording from my acoustic guitar and for vocal. The SM58 must be virtually touching my lips for vocal recording, and it can't really pick up the guitar very well at all. I'm also recording into my computer, and whilst the input levels are at maximum, the recording level is still very low. My basic question is, should I expect to be able to get good amplification at anything other than 1 cm away? Even with the mic plugged straight into the amp the sound is very quiet compared to plugging my guitar directly in.

  Answer

What you are experiencing is the difference in level between different devices. Low impedance microphones, like the SM58 have a very low output level. A guitar, on the other hand, has a much hotter output. The sound card on your computer requires a hotter level.

1) The BEST solution is to use a sound card that is designed for a professional microphone, such as the USBPre ($700) by Sound Devices, or the MobilePre USB ($180) from M-Audio. These devices are quality microphone preamps with a USB computer interface. The MobilePre is only a bit more than the Audio Buddy (mentioned below), but will provide a much, much better audio signal. Both of these are outboard sound cards. That is, you would no longer use the sound card that came in your computer. The USBPre and the MobilePre USB supply phantom power for condenser microphones.

2) The easiest way to interface a professional microphone with a computer soundcard is through the use of an interface. We recommend looking at the Audio Buddy ($120) from M-Audio or the GCi404 ($120) from Rolls. Both of these interfaces will supply phantom power for any condenser microphones, as well.

3) Another possible solution is using a transformer to help boost the level of your SM58 to something that would likely be appropriate for the sound card. The Shure A96F is the correct transformer. It has a female XLR on one end and an 1/8" connector on the other end. Place the transformer at the computer and use a standard XLR cable between it and your SM58. The transformer will be less expensive than the Audio Buddy interface, but it may not provide enough gain for your particular sound card. The A96F will not work with a phantom powered condenser microphone.

Connecting a dynamic microphone to a computer sound card

Sound Blaster Live Value?
