Simon Rhodes - Recording & Mixing Engineer

Studio Engineer finalist of the 2013 year

Simon joined Abbey Road Studios in 1987, after completing an honours Degree in Physics and Music. Internationally respected for his high standards and versatility, Simon has recorded over 100 film scores including Avatar and Harry Potter 1 & 2. In 2008 he was invited to Beijing, to record the music for the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. His Grammys credit his work with the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado and the LSO under Sir Colin Davis. He also works closely with manufacturers, developing future equipment.

Grammy award winning hard-rock act Metallica, has added 76 units of Meyer Sound’s lightest self-powered stage monitor, the MJF-210, to its touring roster.

The new MJF-210 is a compact version of the MJF-212A stage monitor, used by the band in its Northern California rehearsal studio.

Beta testing of the new product took place during the Asian leg of the band’s recent tour, with help from monitor engineer Bob Cowan and assistant monitor engineer Adam Correia.

Metallica’s show director Dan Braun, says: “Meyer Sound embraced our demanding performance specs for a new compact stage monitor that would stand up to the rigors of Metallica touring and satisfy the critical ear of James Hetfield.”

“The resulting MJF-210 exceeds every parameter without compromise. The support we received from the company’s engineering staff demonstrates that everybody at Meyer Sound is indeed a part of the Metallica family,” adds Braun.

PRO SOUND AWARDS 2014: The winners!

The great and the good of pro audio were out in force at the Ministry of Sound in London last night for the triumphant return of the Pro Sound Awards.

This year’s winners included double winner Sound by Design, recipient of both the Permanent Installation Project of the Year and Installed Audio Team of the Year awards; Capital Sound, recognised for its contribution to the groundbreaking 2013 British Summer Time concert at Hyde Park; and Andrew Dudman, who recorded the Oscar-winning score for Gravity – also a winner in the Best Sound in Post-Production category – at Abbey Road.

Paloma Faith’s A Perfect Contradiction won Best Recording Production, while Metropolis completed the list of winners in the studio category, taking home the prize for Best Studio. Although she couldn’t be there in person, Faith showed her appreciation via a specially recorded video message.

As well as the return of the drinks reception, buffet dinner and afterparty, the event saw the debut of The Pre-Roll, which saw early attendees  treated to a series of talks with legendary producers Andre Jacquemin, Ben Hillier and Stephen Street (pictured, R–L, with session host Phil Ward), before engineers Dave Swallow, Matt Kanaris, Jon Burton and Charles “Chicky” Reeves took to the stage for a well-received (and frequently hilarious) live sound panel session.

Other highlights were AIR Studios’ Jon Webber picking up the Rising Star Award before the evening’s major accolades, Lifetime Achievement and Grand Prix, were presented to John Pellowe and Miloco, respectively.
