It is very nice to read these lines and I would like to add some information:
the 57Twin models played by Eric Clapton or Keith Richards have been intensively played for many years. The effect is, that the resonance of the soundwaves has a positive influence to the speakers, the wood of the housing as well as to the chassis, which electronics is fixed with point to point wireing. We can receive a very similar tone, when we use a 59Fender Bassman tweed, play this amp 3 years intensively with a bass-guitar! The speakers will sound much more softer and the crunch-effect will appear at volume 3-4!
To rebuilt an old amp does not automatically mean, that the sound is similar to the old amps: every guitar and amp needs to be played, otherwise they will loose their sound character. Comparing a new 59champ with an old one from 1959 will easily show, how big the difference can be. We never would say, this is one and the same. A good tone and sound will touch you - if this does not happen, forget this stuff and look for something else.
If someone is able to describe a sound of a guitar or amp absolutely precisely, then this musician ones made the experience of "being touched by sound".
This all is not automatically related to expensive series (like custom shop from Fender, Gibson, Marshall ...), you can find it also by cheaper models, but you have to dig very deep to find those.
By the way: a Clapton Strat does not automatically sound like a vintage Strat from 1962. It sounds much more modern and the vibe and mojo feeling is a little bit missing. This you will find, when you are touched by a Mark Knopfler Strat: try it and you will know, what I am talking about.
This is the right way in the right direction (maybe next time we will talk about Hiwatt, Orange/Matamp, Selmer or Marshall?)
